Trust and safety

Is Renopay safe?

Here’s who holds your money, what protects it, what happens if you disagree, and how to check it all for yourself.

Talk it through with us

Your money

Your money is held securely until the work is approved

Every payment is held by our FCA-regulated payment partner. Your builder can see it’s there before they start, and it’s released when the stage is approved.

Safeguarded from day one

  • An FCA-regulated partner. Your money is held by OPP (Online Payment Platform), our payment partner, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
  • A safeguarded account. It’s kept in a safeguarded account, separate from OPP’s and Renopay’s own money.
  • Released on approval. Your builder can see the money is there, but it’s released only when the stage is approved, or automatically if there’s no response or dispute within 14 days.

Payment services are provided by Online Payment Platform Limited (OPP), an Authorised Electronic Money Institution regulated by the FCA, Firm Reference Number 1003976. Read OPP’s terms

Fair if you don’t agree

  1. 1.Raise it in the app. Either side can, with photos and notes. The money for that stage stays held securely while you sort it out.
  2. 2.Agree a way forward. A fix, a part payment or sign-off, confirmed in the app.
  3. 3.An independent decision. If you still can’t agree, an independent RICS surveyor looks at the work and decides how that stage’s money is split.

Renopay doesn’t take sides. Each side pays half the surveyor’s fee when the dispute is escalated, and the surveyor decides who pays it in the end. Read the full dispute process

How the checks work

Each stage is released when it’s approved

The money for a stage is released when you approve it, or by an independent surveyor’s decision if you disagree. If you don’t respond within 14 days of the builder asking, it’s released automatically, after notifications and a reminder.

Every builder is identity-checked

Builders complete OPP’s identity and anti-money-laundering checks before they can receive a payout, so every payment goes to a checked person or business.

Check your builder’s work and credentials too

Renopay doesn’t inspect the work or vet a builder’s workmanship, qualifications or insurance. You approve each stage, so check the work before you do, and check your builder before you hire them.

Questions about safety

Renopay is a technology platform, so it isn't regulated by the FCA itself. The payment services are provided by Online Payment Platform Limited (OPP), an electronic money institution authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, Firm Reference Number 1003976.

It's held securely by OPP (Online Payment Platform), our payment partner, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. It's kept in a safeguarded account, separate from OPP's own money, until the stage is approved.

No. Money held by an electronic money institution such as OPP isn't covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It's protected by safeguarding instead: OPP must keep it separate from its own money, in accounts designed so that customers' money is returned to them ahead of other creditors if OPP ever failed.

Your money is held by OPP, not by Renopay, so it isn't part of Renopay's own finances. It stays safeguarded with OPP.

Every builder completes OPP's identity and anti-money-laundering checks before they can receive a payout. Renopay doesn't vet a builder's workmanship, qualifications or insurance, so it's still worth checking your builder before you hire them.

If the builder asks for approval and the homeowner neither approves the stage nor raises a dispute within 14 days, the payout is released automatically. Renopay notifies the homeowner, and sends a reminder, before that happens.

No. Renopay is neutral. The money is released in line with what you and your builder agree, or with the independent surveyor's decision.
