Who can refer

Anyone. You don't need a Renopay account, you don't need to be a customer, and you don't need to be in the building trade. If you're over 18 and live in the UK, you can refer, and there's no limit on how many builders you refer.

In practice, we expect three groups to do most of the referring. Homeowners who've just finished a project with a builder they rate: yes, you can refer your own builder, and your own project counts as one of their five. Builders referring other builders, because builders know exactly which of their peers runs a proper business, and builders can get their own referral link too, so the scheme compounds. And the professionals who sit around renovation projects: architects, designers, surveyors, who recommend builders for a living anyway. If you're referring in a professional capacity, the sign-up form asks you to say so. It's a disclosure question, not a disqualification.

How it works, step by step

Go to renopay.co.uk/refer, enter your name and email, and you get a personal referral link instantly. Share it however you'd naturally recommend anything: WhatsApp, text, email, LinkedIn. When a builder clicks your link, we log the referral and they see who recommended them. When they register, they're attributed to you.

Then, honestly, months pass. This is the part we'd rather be upfront about than bury: nothing is payable when your builder signs up, or when they run their first project. The reward triggers when your referred builder completes five qualifying projects, meaning five projects of at least £10,000 each, each one counted when its final milestone payment is released.

When that happens, we contact you, collect your payment details (we deliberately don't ask for them before then), and pay your £1,000 within 30 days.

Why five projects, and why £1,000

Because the incentive is designed around one thing: builders who genuinely adopt the platform. A referral scheme that pays on sign-up rewards people for generating sign-ups. Ours rewards you for bringing us a builder who runs real projects, whose money is held securely with a regulated payment institution, and who sticks around. That's the only kind of referral worth £1,000 to us. Five projects at a £10,000 minimum means at least £50,000 of protected work has flowed through the platform before a penny of reward is paid. The economics fund themselves, which is why we can make the number meaningful rather than token.

It also means the best builders to refer are the good ones: established firms doing regular £10k+ residential work. If you know a builder who's tired of chasing invoices and fronting materials from their own pocket, they're precisely who this is for. They get proof of funds before starting work and instant payouts on milestone approval. You're not asking them a favour. You're pointing them at something that fixes their biggest business problem, and getting paid for it.

The small print, in plain English

The full terms live at /refer/terms, but the parts that matter:

• The link is the referral. Attribution runs through your personal link, so make sure your builder actually uses it. If something goes wrong technically, there's a backstop: the builder can confirm in writing within 30 days that you referred them. But the link is the clean route. "I told him about you in the pub in March" is not a claim we can honour, for the same reason no scheme like this can.
• One reward per builder. If two people refer the same builder, the most recent referral before sign-up wins. A builder can only be referred once.
• The scheme is capped at the first 500 rewards. Referrals themselves are unlimited, but £1,000 payouts go to the first 500 qualifying referrals. We publish this because it's honest, and because a cap is what makes a promotion like this sustainable rather than a marketing stunt that gets quietly withdrawn. On that note: if we ever change or close the scheme, referrals already made are honoured under the terms they were made under. Your referral doesn't evaporate because the scheme evolved after you shared your link.
• Payments are made gross. The £1,000 is paid without deductions. Any tax treatment is yours to handle, and if you're referring professionally, that's between you and your accountant.
